Angela Hathaway

M. Ed., LCMHC, LPC, NCC

Background

For many years prior to becoming a counselor, I served the Charlotte community as a childbirth doula and educator. During that time, I recognized the connection between previous traumas (such as childhood abuse, sexual violence, domestic violence, and others) and traumatic childbirth experiences. Supporting these clients quickly became the most rewarding part of my job, motivating me to pursue a career as a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor (LCMHC), with a focus on perinatal disorders and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

While working toward my Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in 2017, I completed an internship at a residential facility for adults with mental health-related disabilities. I then went on to earn a Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Winthrop University in 2019, where I had the opportunity to hone my training on trauma during an internship at Safe Passage—a crisis center and shelter for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.

After obtaining licensure as a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor (LCMHC) in both North Carolina and South Carolina, I opened I Can THRIVE Counseling of the Carolinas, becoming one of few counselors in the Charlotte area specializing in both Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and perinatal disorders.

Specialties

While my background as a childbirth professional equips me with extensive insight into the unique challenges associated with pregnancy, childbirth, new parenthood, and the relational changes that occur during the childbearing year, my expertise includes peripheral difficulties such as miscarriage, stillbirth, infertility, and surrogacy support. As a trauma-focused therapist, I work with many clients with a history of childhood abuse, neglect, and abandonment, sexual violence, and domestic violence. Additionally, since mood disorders Bipolar Disorder, Major Depressive Disorder, Intermittent Explosive Disorder (IED – aka “anger issues”) and personality disorders such as Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) and Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) are often rooted in trauma, I am adept at going beyond the behavioral and emotional symptoms to treat the underlying cause of those symptoms.

Treatment Approaches

Regardless of the diagnosis, I use a variety of evidence-based approaches including “talk therapy” modalities such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and Cognitive Processing Therapy. I’m also a bit of a “science nerd,” and love using neuro-based treatments such as Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). I collaborate with my clients to customize these tools for each client based on their specific difficulties, preferences, and the pace at which they are ready to explore their issues.

Core Values

Beyond the technical and clinical terminologies, my core values are science, psycho-education, and authenticity. I believe that not only should we be using the most evidence-based treatments, my clients should know how and why these approaches work. Basically, my goal is to make you your own therapist!

Some people think counselors are somehow better than the clients. This is far from the truth! At the end of the day, I’m just a regular person, with a regular life, and regular problems. The only difference between you and me is that I have extensive training on how to manage it. I believe that authenticity is the key to building a sense of connection and safety so a client can feel comfortable when they are ready to explore even the most sensitive topics. I don’t think it’s fair for me to expect my clients to sit on my (very comfy) couch and “keep it real” with me, if I’m not willing to show them the same respect.

Oh…and passion. I am genuinely passionate about supporting and witnessing my clients on their path toward personal growth and healing. Regardless of the scale of your difficulties, it would be my privilege and honor to support you on your journey toward living your BEST life

The question is…

Are YOU ready to live your BEST life?
